In oil drilling, geological exploration, and foundation engineering, the performance of drilling fluids directly impacts operational efficiency and cost
control. Polyacrylamide (PAM), as a high-efficiency water-soluble polymer, plays a crucial role in drilling fluids by enhancing viscosity, reducing fluid loss, and stabilizing wellbores. However, different types of PAM are suitable for different drilling conditions. So, how do you choose the right type?
PAM is mainly classified into three types:
Anionic Polyacrylamide (APAM): Ideal for high-salinity and high-pH drilling environments, it provides excellent thickening and suspension properties, effectively reducing fluid loss and stabilizing wellbore walls.
Cationic Polyacrylamide (CPAM): Primarily used for flocculating negatively charged clay particles, it is suitable for complex geological conditions, improving cuttings-carrying capacity.
Nonionic Polyacrylamide (NPAM): Best for neutral or weakly acidic environments, it offers strong salt resistance and maintains stability under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions.
Standard Formation Drilling: Anionic PAM is recommended, as it enhances mud viscosity, minimizes water loss, and ensures wellbore stability.
Complex Formations (e.g., loose sand, clay layers): Cationic PAM is preferred due to its strong flocculation ability, preventing wellbore collapse and
improving drilling efficiency.
High-Temperature Deep Wells or High-Salinity Environments: Nonionic PAM performs best, offering superior heat and salt resistance for long-term fluid stability.
High Molecular Weight PAM (>12 million): Suitable for applications requiring high-viscosity mud, such as horizontal or extended-reach wells.
Medium/Low Molecular Weight PAM (3-10 million): Ideal for conventional drilling, balancing fluidity and filtration control.
Hydrolysis Degree (Ionicity): Anionic PAM typically has a hydrolysis degree of 10%-40%. Higher hydrolysis improves salt resistance but may reduce viscosity—adjust based on actual needs.
Dissolution Method: PAM should be pre-diluted to a 0.1%-0.5% solution and slowly added to the mud system to avoid clumping.
Synergistic Use with Other Additives: Combining with bentonite, PAC (Polyaluminum Chloride), etc., can further enhance drilling fluid performance.
