Analysis and Solutions Regarding White Foam in DAF Unit When Using Cationic PAM

     Recently we received this question from our clients who treat with clothing washing wastewater ,this is a common but important issue in wastewater treatment. To answer the question directly: No, the formation of significant white foam on the surface of your Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit is not a normal or desirable phenomenon. While some minor bubbling is expected, persistent, thick white foam is a key indicator that the treatment process is out of balance.

    This foam can cause operational problems, including reduced treatment efficiency, overflow issues, and difficulties in sludge removal.

The foam is likely caused by one or a combination of the following factors:

1. Overdosing of Cationic PAM (Most Common Cause)

Explanation: When too much cationic PAM is added, not all of the polymer chains can attach to the suspended particles. The excess "free" polymer gets trapped in air bubbles, creating a very stable, viscous, and often white foam.

Solution: Conduct a jar test to precisely determine the optimal dosage. Start with a low dose and gradually increase until you achieve good floc formation with minimal foam.

2. Insufficient or Ineffective Pretreatment with a Coagulant (e.g., PAC)

Explanation: Textile and fabric wash wastewater typically contains surfactants (detergents, cleaning agents) which are powerful foaming agents. If the coagulant (like PAC) dose is too low, it fails to effectively neutralize and precipitate these surfactants. They then carry over into the DAF unit, where the air saturation and PAM interaction exacerbate foaming.

Solution: This is often the primary fix. Optimize the dose of your primary coagulant (PAC). Ensure it is thoroughly mixed and given enough time to react before the PAM is added. A proper coagulant process will remove most surfactants responsible for foaming.

3. Incorrect Polymer Selection

Explanation: Cationic PAM comes in different charge densities (ionicity) and molecular weights. The current product might be too high or too low in charge density for your specific wastewater composition, leading to poor flocculation and excess foam.

Solution: We recommend reviewing the polymer selection. Please provide details of your water chemistry (pH, COD, SS), and we can assist in recommending a more suitable grade of cationic PAM or suggest samples for a new trial.

4. Improper Polymer Mixing and Preparation

Explanation: If the PAM powder is not fully dissolved and "aged," it can form gelatinous clumps ("fish eyes"). These undissolved particles are highly effective at stabilizing foam.

Solution: Ensure your automatic dosing system is functioning correctly. Confirm the preparation concentration, mixing speed, and aging time are all according to the manufacturer's specifications to achieve a perfectly homogeneous solution.

5. DAF Operational Parameters

Explanation: An excessively high air-to-water ratio or pressure in the DAF's saturation tank can create a surplus of very fine microbubbles. This can mechanically create more foam, especially if any of the chemical issues above are also present.

Solution: Check and adjust the DAF's recycle rate and air pressure according to the equipment manufacturer's guidelines.

Recommended Action Plan:

Immediate Step: Perform a Jar Test. This is the most effective way to diagnose the problem. Test different doses of PAC and PAM to find the combination that gives the clearest water with the least amount of foam.

Check Coagulant Dose: Prioritize optimizing the PAC dose before adjusting the PAM.

Review Chemical Preparation: Verify your polymer make-down unit is working correctly.
