5. Sludge Dewatering


Location: Directly before dewatering equipment such as belt presses, centrifuges, or filter presses.

Purpose: This is perhaps the most impactful use of PAM for cost savings. It conditions the sludge to release free water.

Benefit: The polymer forms strong, shear-resistant flocs that allow mechanical equipment to produce a drier cake. This maximizes solids capture, reduces cake moisture content, and improves the efficiency and throughput of the dewatering machinery.

Jar Testing: Laboratory jar testing is non-negotiable to determine the optimal PAM type (anionic, cationic, non-ionic) and dosage for your specific sludge characteristics.

Proper Mixing: Initial intense mixing (in-line static mixer or rapid mix tank) is needed to disperse the polymer solution. This should be followed by gentle flocculation to allow large flocs to form without being sheared apart.
